When eight-year-old Casey came over to spend the afternoon with me, I knew just which book to retrieve from my overcrowded bookshelves. Finding it, I ran my hand over the well-worn cover remembering the countless times as a young girl I had slipped into these stories. The book was In Grandma’s Attic by Arleta Richardson.

Cuddled on our cozy couch, Casey and I traveled back about 150 years ago to a simpler life on a farm where Mabel and her friend, Sarah Jane, carried out their adventures. Casey read aloud the first chapter. In it we were swept into one of the many amusing antics of Mabel and Sarah Jane, who learn through an embarrassing predicament about “pride going before a fall.”

Each chapter begins with Mabel sharing her precious and charming memories with her granddaughter about her life and the lessons she discovered about pride, prayer and faith. It is a character-building book which demonstrates consequences for actions and also that God knows what is best for us.

In Grandma’s Attic is a chapter book for ages 8 and up. It is 144 pages long and has had multiple reprints. It’s most recent publication is by David C. Cook, April 1, 2011. There are ten books in the series, but they can be read as stand-alones too.
